PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC tallied their 4th win in a row, defeating Umpqua Community College 57-52 at Cascade Gym.
The result puts the Panthers in sole possession of 3rd place in the NWAC Southern Region standings, and adds to the momentum the team has generated the past two weeks.
The 1st quarter belonged to PCC, which proved critical for the rest of the game. Nia Bradley scored eight points in the period, and the Panthers took a 20-12 lead in the 2nd period.
Umpqua found their rhythm in the 2nd quarter, and fought back to make the score 28-26 at halftime.
The game turned into a chess match in the second half, as neither team found a consistent scoring touch. The visiting Riverhawks managed to take the lead briefly at 32-30, but eight straight points from PCC, capped by a breakaway layup from India Gultry gave the Panthers the lead for good.
The PCC lead reached eight points on two occasions in the 4th quarter, but Umpqua did not fold and closed to within three points (53-50) on a three pointer from Hannah Nelzen with 17 seconds left. Clutch free throws from Bradley and Tynesha Parnell kept Umpqua at bay however, and the Panthers claimed the hard-fought victory.
Bradley led PCC with 14 points on 4 of 9 shooting and a perfect 5 of 5 from the free throw line. Iris Cubit contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Umpqua's Victoria Hollingshead led all scorers with 18 points.
