EVERETT, Wash. - An unforgettable season for Portland CC women's basketball came to an end with a 64-59 loss to Peninsula College tonight in the quarterfinal round at the NWAC Championship Tournament.
The contest versus Peninsula was close through all 40 minutes. The Pirates managed to make a few more plays than PCC in the first half, which ended up making all the difference. The Panthers led very early in the game with two baskets, but Peninsula scored five straight to take a 5-4 lead. Portland edged ahead 10-9 with 3:50 left in the 1st quarter, but that would be the last lead PCC would enjoy. The Pirates led 16-12 after the 1st period, and then 31-25 at halftime.
The second half was played to a near stalemate. The Panthers fought back to tie the game at 36-36 on a basket from Tynesha Parnell, but could not take the lead as Peninsula had an answer for every challenge.
PCC drew within one point on two occasions in the 4th quarter, but were unable to make the crucial run to pull ahead. A three pointer with 1:40 to play by Parnell made the score 61-59Â but PCC would not score again, ending their season.
Iris Cubit wrapped up her tremendous season with 23 points and nine rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Parnell added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Despite the disappointing result, the 2021-22 Panthers have made their mark at PCC. The team set program records for overall wins (18), region wins (10), and earned a first ever playoff victory.
