PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC moved closer to a playoff berth with a hard fought win over Umpqua CC yesterday by the score of 1-0.
The visiting Riverhawks showcased their improved squad at the Rock Creek Fields, and held the Panthers at bay for much of the game.
PCC managed to break through in the first half, and made it hold up for the rest of the game. Paola Covarrubias scored her first goal of the season in the 38th minute, and it proved to be the game winner.
Umpqua's defensive posture showed with just five shots at goal, forcing PCC keeper Aleena Calvert into two saves to earn the clean sheet.
PCC ended the game with a 17-5 advantage in total shots.
The result puts the Panthers in a tie for 3rd place (4-3-2, 14 points) in the NWAC South with three games remaining. Three tough opponents await PCC, and two of them are road contests.
