Tough Loss Ends Portland's Season

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC women's soccer had their season come to an end with a 1-0 loss versus Clackamas at the Rock Creek Campus.

A win or draw would have sent the Panthers to the post-season as the 3rd seed from the NWAC South Region, but the visiting Cougars leaped over PCC in the standings with the clutch victory.

From the opening whistle, the host Panthers were searching for a goal. Much of the first half was played in the Cougars half, as PCC generated five shots and won four corner kicks. The best chance was a headed goal from Melissa Fraijo, but was called back for offside. Ultimately, no breakthrough occurred and Clackamas ended the period with several counter attacks that nearly found success.

A hard fought second half saw Clackamas gain the upper hand with direct play and vertical passes over the top. It paid off in the 55th minute with Skylar Ross running on to a long ball and finding the net from 18 yards out.

Portland had no answer in the remaining time, as fatigue set in and Clackamas cut out every Panther attack. Several corner kicks were defended well by the Cougars in the dying moments.

"We just weren't quite good enough today, and Clackamas were a bit better so it's a fair result," said coach Shawn Bundy. "I am so proud of these players, and the improvement they demonstrated though the season. We exceeded expectations this year in many ways, so that is encouraging. This loss hurts for sure, but I am very excited for the future of our program."
