ROSEBURG, Ore. - A close and hard fought game ended with Edmonds coming out ahead of Portland, 90-85 at the Umpqua Invitational tonight.
The neutral site contest was the season opener for PCC. The Panthers held a small lead in the first period on several occasions, but the Tritons led by three (49-46) at halftime and then proceeded to lead for the entire second half. Edmonds managed to build their advantage by as many as 12 (86-74) with 5:42 to play, only to watch PCC fight back with an 8-0 run to put the game on edge.
Edmonds made a clutch basket and two free throws in the final moments however, and Portland could only muster a final three pointer that resulted in the five point margin.
Jahvari Martino had a solid debut for PCC, scoring 24 points on 10-15 shooting. Edy Essien added 18 points including five makes from three point range. Hayden Rose contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.Â
