PORTLAND, Ore. - Hayden Rose scored the go ahead basket in the final second to lift Portland CC over Umpqua today 73-72 at Cascade Gym.
As with most of the NWAC South games on Portland's schedule, the contest was close from start to finish. The host Panthers did manage to forge a 12 point lead early in the first half (19-7), but UCC slowly chipped away at the gap and trailed just 33-30 at halftime.
The lead changed hands 9 times in the second half, as neither team could string together the needed defensive stops to take control of the game. Six of those lead changes happened in final 1:45, as the teams traded baskets on every possession down the stretch. Hayden Rose provided the final margin with a tough move and score with four seconds remaining. The Riverhawks rushed up the court and a baseline shot was no good as time expired, and shouts for a foul were unheeded.
Rose finished the game with a double-double, scoring 22 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Josh Lincoln contributed much needed scoring, adding a team high 26 points.
The win was crucially important for the Panthers in the NWAC standings. PCC now stands at 7-6 and alone in 4th place.
