PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC suffered their first loss of the season, falling 63-60 to Lane CC yesterday at Cascade Gym.
It was the first contest for the Panthers since January 6th thanks to the lengthy winter storm that affected the Portland area. PCC found themselves back in action versus Lace CC - the NWAC's top ranked team.
The Titans present a tough challenge, and the Panthers looked ready to meet it by forging a 13-10 lead after the first quarter. Defensively, PCC held Lane to 3 of 18 shooting while forcing four turnovers.
Lane fared better in quarter number two, and slowly went in front thanks to 50 percent shooting. Portland tried to keep pace and managed to stay in the game thanks to a 6 of 8 effort from the free throw line. Eventually, Portland trailed 29-27 at halftime.Â
Iris Cubit led the way for PCC during a strong 3rd quarter, scoring six points to help send the team four points ahead (45-41) heading into the final period.
Midway through 4th quarter, the Titans made back to back three pointers to take a 54-48 lead which proved to be the difference. PCC fought back to within a single point on two occasions down the stretch, but couldn't find the key basket they needed. Lane made four straight free throws in the last moments to keep PCC at bay.
Cubit led the Panthers with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Lilly Walker added 10 points.Â
