EUGENE, Ore. - Portland CC traveled to face Lane CC today, falling 76-61 to the NWAC's #1 ranked team.
The host Titans have been a buzzsaw this season, outscoring their opponents by an average of 34 points per game on the way to a 15-0 record. The Panthers outscored Lane in two of the four quarters played today, but a 23-1 run at the end of the second quarter was the difference for Lane.
PCC led 14-12 after the first quarter, which was the first time Lane trailed after one quarter this season. Portland continued to match the powerful Titans into the second period as well, and led 23-20 with 6:36 left until halftime. That's where the game turned, as Lane went on a tear, rattling off 23 points in six minutes. Meanwhile the Panther shooters went cold and managed just a single free throw before the halftime buzzer.
The Panthers weren't discouraged however, and outscored Lane by four points in the second half. Lane was committed to protecting the paint, forcing PCC into 39 attempts from the three point line. Portland made nine of those tries. A rough showing from the free throw line (6 of 20) also hindered any full comeback attempt.
Portland fought hard to the buzzer, managing to cut a deficit that reached as much as 27 points in the 3rd quarter all the way down the final gap of 15 points.
Amelia Echternkamp led PCC with 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting. BettyAnn Wilson added nine points and 12 rebounds.
