PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC kept their playoff chances alive thanks to a gritty 1-0 win versus Lane CC today at a rainy Rock Creek Campus field.
Kayla Vera scored her team leading 6th goal in the 25th minute. Both teams were hampered by the wet conditions and steady wind, so most attacks stalled quickly before reaching the penalty area. Portland used one of their few ventures forward with a nice combination up the left flank. Melanie Alcantar Lopez managed to get by the defense a place a perfect centering pass to Vera, who finished from four yards out. Titian goalkeeper Savannah Hoffen was able to get a hand to the shot, but could not keep it out.
From there, the Panthers dug in defensively and were able to limit Lane to eight total shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Oliveira played all 90 minutes, making five big saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
The result puts PCC at 5-3-3 (18 points)Â in the NWAC South standings, just two points behind Lane for 3rd place and the final playoff spot. Both teams have one more game to play. Portland will travel to region leaders Umpqua, while Lane will host Clackamas.
Sophomores Melanie Alcantar Lopez, Aurora Hammerstedt, Natalie Oliveira, Lauryn Bell-Cabacungan, Paulina Ramirez Mendez, Emerson Monnie, Joselyn De Los Santos and Susana Roman-Marquez were honored before the game for their contributions to Panther soccer.
