ROSEBURG, Ore. - Second chance points proved to be the difference as Portland CC fell 87-76 on the road versus Umpqua CC today.
The host Riverhawks shot the ball at a solid 46 percent, but also rebounded 17 of their own misses. The resulting 17 second chance points were key to the result as the visiting Panthers were unable to control the glass.
Despite the disparity, PCC held their own and matched Umpqua point for point well into the second half. Jackson Leach tied the game at 48-48 with 13:43 to play, but the Riverhawks pulled away from there.
The gap reached as many as 12 points (68-56), with every attempted rally by the Panthers met by a offensive putback or free throw make by UCC.
Jace VanVoorhis scored in the paint to cut the lead down to 79-75 with 1:30 on the clock, but two Portland turnovers down the stretch were costly.
Leach led PCC with 22 points. Jaxson Spafford came off the bench to score 18 points. Bas Corion continues his improved play, adding 13 points and eight rebounds.
