PCC Opens Region Play With Loss at Lane

EUGENE, Ore. - Despite leading by seven at halftime, Portland opened their region schedule with 88-78 loss at Lane today.

The Panthers were pleased with their performance during the early action in unfriendly territory, leading 39-32 at halftime and by seven (52-45) with 14:16 left in the game. The host Titans made the needed plays to close out the game however, securing the win with key baskets and accurate free throw shooting.

Portland built their advantage in the first half with solid defense, holding Lane to 30 percent shooting. Ball handling was a strength also, as PCC committed just four turnovers. Jaxson Spafford led the offensive effort with 10 points including a pair of three pointers.

The second half seemed to point to a hard fought Panther win after six minutes, but the Titans began to find their scoring touch while holding PCC to one shot at the other end. A 10-1 run by Lane made the score 55-53 in favor of the hosts, and the Titans would not trail again.

A key stat in the result was the free throw discrepancy. Lane connected on 23 of 24 attempts, while Portland was just 9 of 18.

Spafford finished with 19 points to lead the Panthers. Vashon Hardges added 14 points and five rebounds.
