PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC picked up an important win over Clackamas Community College today at Cascade Gym, 92-88.
The result snapped a four game losing streak from PCC, and keeps the Panthers in the playoff hunt at 4-5 in the region standings.
It sure didn't look good for Portland in the first half, as the visiting Cougars jumped out to 53-39 lead at the break. A fifth straight loss was in the making for PCC and little resistance seemed to be offered. Clackamas torched the nets at a 68 percent rate in the period.
The script was flipped in favor of Portland late in the second half as the defense turned stout, while shots began to fall at the other end of the court. The guard combo fo Josiah Sewell and Trevon Richmond came alive, which led to the charge that overcame the Cougar lead.
PCC trailed by 13 points (84-71) with 6:37 to play. At that point, the Panthers proceeded to reel off 15 straight points and take an 86-84 lead - their first of the night. A stunned Cougar team managed to tie the game on two occasions in the final minute, but a layup and two free throws from Richmond provided the needed margin to complete the comeback victory for PCC.
The aforementioned Sewell (21 points) and Richmond (19 points) were the catalysts, while George Sadi and Taylor Howard added 18 points each.Â
