EVERETT, Wash. - The Portland CC women's basketball team continued their breakthrough season with a 86-75 win over Centralia at the NWAC Championship Tournament.
It marks the first ever post season victory for the Panther program which has been active since 1989.Â
PCC enjoyed a tremendous game from an offensive standpoint, shooting 49 percent on the night. The Panthers hit 6 of 11 tries from three point range in the 1st quarter, setting the tone for the contest and helping the team to a 23-19 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
The pace of the game slowed a bit in the 2nd quarter, but PCC also improved their defensive effort which allowed the Panthers to take a 39-32 lead into the break.
Portland took control in the 3rd quarter, exploding for 28 points in the period while building a 23 point lead (65-42). Iris Cubit made her presence felt, scoring 10 points and passing for three assists in the quarter.
As would be expected, Centralia did not give up and began to apply some full court pressure in the 4th quarter. The Trailblazers made some headway by forcing some turnovers and converting them into points. The gap was too large however and PCC relied again on Cubit, who powered inside for 10 more points in the period. Centralia managed to cut the lead down to single digits, but the Panthers withstood the charge and claimed the historic victory.
Cubit finished the game with 24 points and nine rebounds. India Gultry was a key factor for PCC, scoring 20 points and grabbing a game high 12 rebounds. Tynesha Parnell (15 points) and Nia Bradley (12 points) were also in double figures.
