PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC started their 2023-24 campaign with a 60-48 win over South Puget Sound at the Cascade Gym. It's their first contest of a three game stint at the Harold Williams Invitational that involves six NWAC teams.
The Panthers led from the opening tip, scoring the first eight points of the game. Six of those points came from Iris Cubit in her return to the court. Cubit did not score again for the remainder of the game, but her teammates picked up the slack.
The visiting Clippers recovered from the early deficit and managed to cut the lead down to 12-11 early in the second quarter, but PCC built their advantage back up to eight points by halftime.
Portland took control of the game in the 3rd period, stretching the lead out to 19 points (40-21) while playing stingy defense. The Panther ended the game holding SPSC to 23.7 percent shooting for the game.
Cheyann Ashworth was the most consistent performer, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in her Panther debut. JaLay Harris-Burns added nine points while committing 0 turnovers for the game.
