SALEM, Ore. - Portland CC overcame a five point deficit in regulation, then powered past Chemeketa in overtime to claim a 78-72 win on the road today.
Trailing 63-58 with under three minutes remaining, the Panthers closed with a 6-1 run to tie the game and force overtime. Ambrose Johnson provided the tying bucket with a drive and layup with three seconds remaining. Chemeketa could not get up a winning shot with the few ticks left on the clock.Â
PCC then scored the first two baskets of overtime and did not look back. Johnson and Hayden Rose did all the damage for the Panthers, scoring seven points each. Combined with a stingy extra period defense, Portland was able to secure the important NWAC South region win.
The result keeps PCC in the hunt for a region playoff spot at 6-6.Â
Johnson and Rose led the team with 16 points each, while Johnathan Claxton contributed a season best 13 points along with eight rebounds.
