VANCOUVER, Wash. - Portland CC started their NWAC South Region schedule with a 106-90 win over Clark yesterday, hitting the century mark in scoring for the seventh time this season.
The Panthers were not missing a beat after the Christmas break, jumping out to a 17 point lead (35-18) midway through the firs half. Jahvari Martino was the catalyst, scoring 24 first period points with a mix of perimeter shots and drives to the basket. Portland as a team scorched the nets for 64 percent shooting before halftime (25 of 39), which pushed the Panther lead to a commanding 63-42 heading into the locker room.
PCC continued to attack in the second half, and stretched their lead to as many as 33 points (84-51). Newly rostered players Kyle Gruhler (13 points) and Jamie McGrail (11 points) were two of six Panthers that scored in double figures).
The host Penguins staged a late rally that cut the deficit in half, but the effort was too late to change the outcome.Â
Martino finished with 26 points to lead PCC. Hayden Rose shook off a slow start to finish with 17 points and seven rebounds.
