ROSEBURG, Ore. - Portland CC's winning streak reached nine after defeating Umpqua CC on the road yesterday, 99-96.
With the South Region title already wrapped up, the Panthers looked sharp as they prepare for the NWAC Championship Tournament.
The Riverhawks gave PCC a strong challenge, as the host team wanted to send their sophomores out with a victory in their final home game of the season.
The Panthers started strong and led by as many as nine points (18-9) in the first half before UCC fought back to lead by one at the break, 56-55.
The first portion of the second half belong to Umpqua, as they sprinted ahead to lead 78-70 which proved to be their largest of the night.
Portland responded and regained the advantage at 86-84 and would not trail again. Umpqua cut the gap back down to one point in the final minute, but PCC countered with two free throws from Kyle Gruhler while forcing the Riverhawks into missed shots on their two final possessions.
Jahvari Martino and Kyle Gruhler led PCC with 20 points each.
