EUGENE, Ore. - It wasn't easy, but Portland CC earned an important early season road win over Lane CC today 75-66, making their NWAC South Region record 2-1.
The Panther defense was the story today, holding the host Titans to 32 percent shooting overall, and just 5 of 25 from three point range.
The consistent defensive stops were needed as PCC also struggled to shoot from distance, making just 4 of 26 tries. Fortunately, the visitors found enough space in the paint to get some easy buckets and build a small but steady lead in the second half.
PCC forged a small advantage at halftime (35-29), which they turned into a 12 point lead early on in the 2nd period. The Panthers would not trail again, but the Titans did make a rally and drew within three points on two occasions. Clutch baskets from JahAllah Van turned back each threat, and Portland eventually secured the win with consistent free throw shooting and solid rebounding down the stretch.
Jackson Leach shook off a slow start to lead PCC with 17 points and four assists. Jamie McGrail (11), Edy Essien (11), Daniel James (10), and Vashon Hardges (10) were also in double figures.
