THIS WEEK - Panther Basketball will host Mt. Hood on Wednesday (5:30pm and 7:30pm) and travel to Lane on Saturday (2:00pm and 4:00pm).
RECENT RESULTS
WOMEN - The Panthers dropped their NWAC South Region opening game at Linn-Benton 67-54. PCC was unable to score consistently, shooting 35 percent for the game. Abbie Scharringhausen was an exception, as the freshman made 8 of 9 shots from the floor while scoring a career high 16 points. The Panthers were sluggish in the first half as the host Roadrunners built a 42-26 halftime lead. Portland was much better defensively in the second half, particularly in the 4th quater, holding the hosts to just three made field goals. PCC closed the gap down to 9 points (55-46) in the final period, but could not find the scoring burst to come all the way back. Amelia Echternkamp added 15 points and six assists.
MEN - Portland played an exciting NWAC South Region contest at Linn-Benton last Saturday, but came away with a 87-85 loss in overtime. PCC looked to be the more prepared team after the holiday break, building a 27-14 lead midway through the first half. The host Roadrunners responded however, and made the score 36-32 at halftime. The game turned into a seesaw battle, as the teams traded the lead seven times during the second half action. At the end of regulation, LBCC hit a three pointer with seven seconds on the clock to tie the game, and a game winning attempt from Portland on the final possession missed the mark. In overtime. both teams found ways to score but Linn-Benton took advantage of three Panther turnovers to creep in front. Daniel James tied the game for PCC at 82-82 with a huge three pointer, but the Roadrunners scored on their next two possessions while the Panthers committed a turnover and could only muster a free throw. Daniel James put forth a career best effort of 26 points and 17 rebounds, showing his full potential as a top player in the NWAC South Region. JahAllah Van added 14 points off the bench. Edy Essien scored 11 points in his season debut.
BY THE NUMBERS
WOMEN - The Panthers have been a three point shooting team this season, averaging 25 attempts (8th in the NWAC) and 7 makes (10th in the NWAC) per game. Kaylee Foster has been the most prolific with 22 makes this year. Injuries to key players Lilly Walker and Cheyann Ashworth have forced young players into action. Tali Sanders (4.8 ppg) and Kennedy Cook (4.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg) are making the most of their increased minutes. Amelia Echternkamp (14.6 ppg) and BettyAnn Wilson (11.6 ppg) are carrying the bulk of scoring and ball handling duties.
MEN - Portland continues their attacking style this season, resulting in plenty of shots from three point range. PCC fires up 28.4 per game (6th in the NWAC), and makes 8.6 per game (7th in the NWAC). The Panthers have proved to be a solid rebounding team despite a relative lack of size, grabbing 39.2 per game (6th in the NWAC). Jackson Leach, who missed two games due to injury, leads the team at 15.8 ppg and 4.3 apg. Daniel James (10.5), JahAllah Van (13.0), Jason Amens (10.4), and Vashon Hardges (10.8) also average double figures in scoring as the PCC offense has spread the wealth.
ABOUT MT. HOOD
WOMEN - The Saint women enter the game on Wednesday with a 1-7 overall record, and are coming off a heavy loss at home to Umpqua (111-45). Yet to find their shooting touch, Mt. Hood is making 34 percent of their total shots and just 26 percent from three point range. Lisa Hartwich (8.7 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Alex Rowley (8.0 ppg) are their most consistent performers. PCC defeated the Saints both times last season, 64-51 and 77-58.
MEN - After a decent start to the season Mt. Hood has lost five games in a row, and now stands at 4-9 overall. The Saints fell to Umpqua last weekend 75-72. They shoot the ball quite well from three point range at 36 percent (3rd in the NWAC), but don't take many (14.4 per game, 30th in the NWAC). Jalen Childs is a threat to opposing defenses, scoring 15.9 points per game. Elijah Munyan is a solid presence at 7.8 ppg and 5.2 rpg. PCC won both games versus the Saints last season.
ABOUT LANE
WOMEN: The Titan women are the NWAC Tournament defending champions, and currently ranked #1 in the latest coaches poll. Lane is a perennial region favorite and this year is no different, They sport an unblemished record of 14-0 while scoring 86.4 ppg. Emma McDonald leads the team at 16.4 ppg, along with four of her teammates that score in double figures each night.
MEN: The Lane men are enjoying a successful start to the season, currently at 9-2 overall with a six game winning streak. Ben Thornbrue (20.3 ppg) and Silas Wright (17.0 ppg) are a solid 1-2 punch. The Titans life to shoot from distance, averaging 11.5 makes from behind the line which is 2nd best in the NWAC.
