PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland trailed by as much as 19 in the second half, then rallied all the way back to within three but eventually fell 64-58 to Wenatchee Valley tonight inside Cascade Gym. It was the first of three games the Panthers will play at the Harold Williams Invitational tournament.
It was the first game for the Panthers under new head coach Chelsea Stocks, who saw her team debut with an up and down performance - not unexpected for a group with only one returning player.
The action on the court was disjointed due to 48 turnovers between the two teams, but it was the visiting Knights that found enough rhythm to lead 23-8 after the first quarter.
PCC settled into the game beginning in the second quarter and was able to cut the gap down to single digits (30-22) before hitting the locker room at halftime trailing by 10. Kamakila Waiwaiole led the charge with nine points in the period.
Portland was sluggish to start the 3rd quarter, and WVC took advantage with a 10-1 run to move out to a 19 point lead (44-25). PCC recovered enough to draw within 12 points by the end of the period.
The 4th quarter belonged to the Panthers but several good scoring chances were missed, and nine turnovers blunted any hope of overcoming the deficit. PCC held the Knights to just 29 percent shooting (4 of 14), but couldn't convert on their shooting (6 of 20) to complete the comeback.
Waiwaiole finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. Bregan Ruhland added 10 points and 5 assists. Abbie Scharringhausen owned the glass with 12 rebounds.
