PORTLAND, Ore. - After three straight wins, Portland CC dropped their first game of the young season yesterday at home to Lower Columbia, 80-65.
Three point shooting - which has been a strength for the Panthers - was absent versus the Devils, with the team hitting just 5 of 22 tries. The LC defense was strong all game, as PCC managed just 36 percent overall from the floor.
Despite the challenge, Portland was very much in the game through the first half. Jace VanVoorhis tied the game at 30-30 with a drive and layup with 4:07 left in the period, but Lower Columbia headed into the locker room up by seven (42-35) thanks to a 12-5 run.
Portland came out of the break cold, and the visitors took advantage. While the shots weren't falling, LC stretched their lead out to a game high 19 (61-42). The hosts attempted to rally, and cut the gap down to 10 (63-53) with 7:46 to play but could draw no closer. The Devils closed out the game with timely baskets and solid defense.
Jackson Leach lead PCC with 21 points and four assists. Luke Jessup added 13 points and five rebounds.
