SALEM, Ore. - A big first half sent Portland to a comfortable win over Chemeketa yesterday, 77-56.
The Panthers were locked in from the opening tip, and jumped out to an 18-5 lead and never looked back. Defense was the catalyst for PCC, holding the host Storm to just 25 percent shooting (6 of 24) and forcing 11 turnovers over the 20 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Portland scored at a 54 percent clip and made seven of 12 three point attempts.
The second half was much more competitive, but the Panthers responded to every rally attempt and allowed the Storm no closer than 16 points (70-54).
Daniel James patrolled the paint for 20 points and nine rebounds. Jackson Leach finished with 17 points and six assists, and was particularly effective in the second half to keep PCC in front. Jamie McGrail (10) and Edy Essien (10) also contributed double figures.
Portland now sits at 8-3 in NWAC South play, just a half game behind leaders Clark (8-1) with four games to play.
