PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland CC scored a goal in the final minute of the game to salvage a point versus Chemeketa today at the Rock Creek Campus.
In the dying moments of the second half, the Panthers made an attack up the left flank. Lauryn Bell-Cabacungan was fouled just outside the box on the left side, and Joselyn De Los Santos stepped up to take the free kick. Every Panther moved forward into the penalty area for the last gasp effort, including keeper Evelyn Hollingsworth.
With everyone expecting a cross to the far post, De Los Santos went short instead with a pass on the ground to Bell-Cabacungan - and the sophomore did not disappoint. Bell-Cabacungan swung a boot that arced a perfectly placed shot over the Chemeketa keeper and into the net. The referee blew the final whistle just seconds later and Portland breathed a sigh of relief to avoid the defeat.
Coach Shawn Bundy was excited about his team's resilience and ability to dig deep at the end to get the tie. He said "That goal shows a lot about our strong team culture this year and I'm very excited to see where this season takes us!"
Chemeketa scored their goal by way of former Panther Mira Thornton, who found the mark in the 24th minute.
