Stunning Comeback for PCC Versus Clackamas

PORTLAND, Ore. - Despair was turned to joy for Portland CC, as the Panthers completed an improbable comeback win over Clackamas CC tonight, 66-62.

The game was considered a must-win, with the visiting Cougars sitting one game ahead of PCC in the NWAC South standings and both squads fighting for a playoff spot.

Portland seemed to be watching their season slip away in this one, as Clackamas pounced in the 1st quarter. Before the Panthers could breathe, CCC was up 23-6 and looked to be the better team.

Recovering somewhat in the 2nd quarter, Portland stopped the bleeding and at least steadied themselves defensively. Still, the Cougars led 36-20 at halftime and had every reason to feel confident in the final outcome.

Coach Graham McFall regrouped the team at halftime, and the change in tactics must have worked. PCC proceeded to cut the deficit all the way down to two points (48-46) during the 3rd quarter, capped by a three pointer from Kirsten Martin in their final possession.

The Panthers then made enough clutch plays in the 4th quarter to get over the top. Raven Parson came off the bench to score five crucial points, and PCC made 7 of 11 free throws while shooting 6 of 11 from the floor. Meanwhile, the lid went on the basket for Clackamas, who made just seven field goals after halftime.

Cara Dinneen shook off a slow start to lead PCC with 15 points. Iris Cubit added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The result moves PCC up to 9-5 in the NWAC South standings tied with Chemeketa for 4th place. Clackamas has played one less game, and is now 9-4.
