RECENT RESULTS

After two games last week, the Panthers are 12-8 overall and 5-3 in NWAC South play.

WIN at Clark: 89-70

Portland CC turned a close game versus Clark into a comfortable win 89-70 thanks to a dominant 2nd half. The teams fought to a standstill over the 20 minutes of action in the 1st half. JahAllah Van was the key player for PCC, as he put up 12 points of the bench to help the Panthers to a 39-37 lead. The second half saw Portland shoot 57 percent from the floor and out rebound the Penguins 20-13. Clark shooters went cold, making just 31 percent of their attempts. Portland's lead steadily grew over the period, with the gap reaching a high of 21 points just before the final buzzer. Daniel James was a force, as the post player scored with a variety of drives and post moves. He finished with a game high 27 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Van added 19 points in a solid performance off the bench.

LOSS vs Umpqua: 75-70

Portland CC missed their opportunity to go atop the NWAC South standings, falling to Umpqua 75-70 at Cascade Gym. The two teams were locked in a competitive game, but the visiting Riverhawks were able to gain the advantage for a stretch in the first half. Over a seven minute duration, UCC moved the score from a 9-9 tie to a 30-17 lead. PCC closed the gap down to 36-27 at halftime, but the Panthers did not make up the deficit for the rest of the game. Portland found more success scoring the ball in the second half, but Umpqua had an answer for every rally attempt. A last effort from Portland made the score 69-65 with 2:15 remaining, but the Panthers could not get over the hump. The result puts UCC on top of the standings at 5-2 while PCC drops to 5-3, both solidly in the top four and playoff position. Jackson Leach led Portland with 19 points and four assists. Daniel James added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Panthers are proving to be a stingy defensive group, averaging 8.2 steals per game - 6th best in the NWAC. PCC is also a solid rebounding team, averaging 39.3 per game which is 5th best in the NWAC. Daniel James has much to do with that, averaging 10.2 per game which is 5th best in the NWAC. Jackson Leach has been on a tear, scoring 18 points or more in his last three games while making 18 of 19 free throws. JahAllah Van's 19 points at Clark raised his season average to 11.1 per game.
