RECENT RESULTS

After two games last week, the Panthers are 15-8 overall and 8-3 in NWAC South play.

WIN at Mt. Hood: 98-68

Portland cruised to a comfortable win at Mt. Hood 98-68, keeping pace in the NWAC South standings. PCC jumped out to a 13-2 lead in this one, and never trailed versus the short handed Saints. The home team showed a little life toward the end of the first half, scoring seven straight to make the score 33-25. Portland responded and went on to lead by 18 points at halftime (53-35). The gap expanded out to 30 points quickly in the second half, and Mt. Hood had no answer. Portland held Mt. Hood to just 30 percent shooting in the half and 34 percent for the game. The Panthers shot the ball well at 48.7 percent and were especially effective from the three point line, making 13 of 28 attempts. Daniel James was a menace in the paint, scoring 27 points and grabbing 21 rebounds. Edy Essien added 16 points including four three point makes.

WIN vs Lane: 73-64

Portland withstood a late charge from Lane CC, and came out on top with a crucial 73-64 win at Harold Williams Court. The Panthers led 59-50 with just under seven minutes remaining in the game, and looked to close out a hard fought win. The visiting Titans had other plans, and stormed back to take a 64-63 lead with 3:07 showing on the clock. After a timeout, PCC finished the game by scoring 10 unanswered points. The Panther defense flustered Lane into four straight missed shots and a turnover in those final three minutes. On the offensive end Daniel James and Edy Essien converted clutch baskets in the paint, and Jackson Leach sealed the result with four consecutive free throws. The outcome puts Portland a game ahead of Lane in NWAC South standings, and one game behind league leaders Clark. Leach led the way with 23 points on 8 of 17 shooting, Daniel James recovered from early foul trouble to add 10 points and 10 rebounds. Edy Essien contributed 14 points.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Panthers have won 5 of 6 games to climb up the NWAC South standings. Now just a half game behind league leaders Clark, a matchup with the Penguins on February 19 might be the deciding contest. Rebounding continues to be a strength, as PCC grabs 5.3 more per game than their opponents. Daniel James (10.8 per game) leads the way, with Peter Oguama (7.0) and Vashon Hardges (6.2) adding to the team effort. Jackson Leach continues his positive impact, averaging 16.5 ppg and now sits at 97 assists for the season, which is 9th best in the NWAC. Oguama has been adding a welcome scoring boost to his reliable rebounding off the bench, shooting over 50 percent from the floor and raising his average to 5.7 per points per game.

ABOUT CHEMEKETA

Chemeketa has dropped five games in a row to fall to 7-15 overall and 2-8 in region play. Despite the struggles, the Storm have shown flashes of their talent with good wins over Lane and SWOCC. Chemeketa has yet to win a road game but is 5-6 at home. The Storm shoot a lot of three pointers (24.8 per game) and get to the free throw line often (19.6 attempts per game). The Panthers will need to identify several threats, as Gabe Wiggington (13.9), Cooper Gobel (14.5), Kenton Wright (12.6), and Kellen Sande (11.7) all average double figure scoring. PCC defeated Chemeketa 84-74 earlier this season.

ABOUT CLACKAMAS

Clackamas is annually a contender in the NWAC South, but have fallen back from their usual standard this season at 10-14 overall and 4-7 in region play. The Cougars are losers of three straight games but are still a dangerous team, especially at home where they are 6-5 this year.  They are a decent scoring team (79.0 points per game) thanks to 8.8 three pointers made per game. Gray Thompson is their top scorer at 15.2 per game. Colton Blackham (13.6) and Conor Oertel (12.5) also average double figures. PCC won the previous meeting with Clackamas, 79-73.
